Culture vulture
Immersing myself in the city's art and culture! Having decided against trekking, I have the luxury of time in this vibrant town, and it's proving inspirational in terms of understanding what I'm seeing, places and people alike.
Andean history is celebrated in grandiose style throughout Cusco, not least as this is deemed to be the centre of the Inca empire founded by Pachacuti, the mighty ruler. He united the diverse tribes along the five rivers flowing into the valley (now underground) and designed the "puma" city, the puma being a sacred animal.
Well, I think that's right😀. The finite detail still escapes me, although I do recall he's supposed to have lived until 125. Um. Oral histories can err on exaggeration!
The city built a splendid monument in his honour in 1992, Monument to Inca Pachacuti, which provides splendid views of the city. As you climb the tower a sound and light narrative weaves the story of his reign in glorious technicolour.
The city museums have given me more of an insight into the complex history of this nation. At the Qorikancha site museum curators tell an absorpting dialogue of how the Spanish conquerers in the 16th century buried the Inca temples, literally, and stole Inca gold to line their churches. Yet now, despite everything, the Andean history is alive and well and very much part of Peru today.
Cusco is very different to anywhere else I ve been in Peru and despite its tourism it has a cosmopolitan buzz which is great fun.
